I live in Virginia but worked in Maryland and was charged for taxes in both states instead of JUST Virginia. I need assistance correcting both tax years.

You are correct, because Virginia and Maryland share a reciprocal tax agreement, your wages should only be taxed in your home state of Virginia. To correct both tax years, you will need to amend your 2023 and 2024 Maryland and Virginia returns in TurboTax Online.

If you originally filed a resident return using Form 502 but should have filed as a nonresident, you should use Form 505X (Maryland Nonresident Amended Tax Return) to make the correction.

In addition, if you originally claimed a Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State on your Virginia returns, you must remove that credit and pay Virginia the remaining tax you owe, as reciprocity guidelines do not allow this credit.

To be sure you are having the correct withholding from your paychecks, you should complete Maryland Form MW507 and give it to your employer so they stop withholding Maryland taxes (by checking the Virginia box on Line 4).  Also, fill out Virginia Form VA-4 to ensure they properly withhold your home state income taxes.

To update your residency status and amend both state returns in TurboTax Online, use these steps:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax Online, scroll down to the Your tax returns & documents section on your dashboard, select the specific tax year you need to fix (2023 or 2024), and click Amend (change) return.
  2. Choose Amend using TurboTax Online and click on the State Taxes tab to access your state returns.
  3. Open the Maryland state module, go to the State Personal Info section, and change your status from resident to Nonresident.
  4. Proceed through the Maryland allocation screens and adjust your Maryland-sourced wage income to zero so that TurboTax generates Form 505X and calculates a full refund of your withholdings.
  5. Next, open your Virginia state return, go through the interview screens, and completely remove the Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State.
  6. Complete the screens to see your adjusted Virginia balance due, then follow the instructions to print, sign, and mail your amended paperwork to each state department of revenue.
  7. Repeat this exact process for the second tax year you need to fix.
