If you never filed the amended return then nothing happens.

When you are on your 2021 tax return using the online editions, click on Cancel Amend on the left side of the online program screen.

Does your amendment show that you now owe the IRS $1,400 ? It should.

If so, don't pay it, the IRS will correct your original return for you.

You hope.

This happened to my brother-in- law and now they're charging him twice.

Yes! This is exactly what happened. At the end of the amendment I agreed for direct withdrawal of the 1,400…is it out of my hands now?
