I'm trying to print my 1040 form. It is 137 pages long. Why?

A PDF of a tax return includes all the forms, schedules, worksheets and information only forms for the tax return.

If you want to print just the tax return then just select the pages you want to print.

For any prior year ( years 2019 or earlier ) tax return PDF files downloaded now (December of 2020) from an "Online" tax account, and IF..if you didn't create and download a Filing copy while that year's software was active

...then you downloaded the PDF from that "Online" TTX account at a later date, then that PDF contains a bunch of pages and worksheets that are not to be filed....usually labelled at the top as "Keep for your records". All of the Federal tax pages to be mailed will be above the "Tax History Report" in the list pf PDF pages, at least I've never found any forms needed below that History page (there might be a very few pages above the History page will not be mailed, like 1040-ES forms if any are there. ) .

.......If you prepared and need to file the state forms too, the State forms to be printed may be more difficult to figure out, but in my list of forms, in the state section of the PDF, those not needed are labelled "Keep for your records" at the top of the first page of each worksheet not required.
