Question

I just found out my SS card has “NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT” written on it and I don’t know why or how to get that cleared off?

Turbo Tax informed of this while I was filing my taxes.

Contact social security.

Yes you missed a checkbox.   Go back to My Info and edit your name and go though the questions again. Right below where you entered your ssn is a check box...Check if this SSN is checked for not valid for employment (this is uncommon). Uncheck it.

SSN not valid will affect…..
the Enhanced Senior Deduction
to claim a dependent, the dependent's ssn should be valid for employment
to get the Child Tax Credit the dependent's ssn should be valid for employment

Does your actual Social Security card from the Social Security Administration say "Not Valid for Employment" on the card, or do you mean that it says that in TurboTax?

If your actual Social Security card says "Not Valid for Employment" you have to ask the Social Security Administration why it says that. You can call them at 800-772-1213. If the actual card does say "Not Valid for Employment" then you have to leave that box checked in TurboTax.

If your actual card does not say "Not Valid for Employment," but it says that in TurboTax, see the posts from VolvoGirl above.
