Question

I just filed my 2023 federal and state tax return. I just received an amended w2 from my employer that changes the amounts I filed. What do I do?

I am a full time student and have a part time job so I filed an EZ return.

Your filed return will be pending until the IRS starts accepting returns on Jan 29 and can not be changed. If your return is accepted you will get an email. If the return is rejected the e-mail will tell you what to correct and you can make changes before e-filing again. Amend to change an accepted return after you get your refund. Instructions below

If you just filed your returns, wait until they have been Accepted by the tax agencies (Federal and State).

If they are Rejected for any reason, you'll be able to open your return and Edit the W-2 and re-file.

What you could do in the meantime is, save a copy of your returns to your computer, then open your return and edit the W-2 to see if it changes your Refund.

If it doesn't, you don't need to Amend, just save the corrected W-2 for your records.   If it does, you have up to three years to Amend Your Return, so don't panic.
