I have to file a return for an estate of a deceased person. They filed in 2019, did not file in 2020 and died in 2021. do I have to file a return for 2020?

we can't answer that because there are filing thresholds and you have provided no info about the individual or their income.

read the who must file in the instructions for 2020 and 2021. state filing requirements might be different.

@youngblood-krist -   one of reasons to file for 2020 is because they were probably eligible for the 1st two stimulus payments.  if they did not receive them, the estate is eligible to receive them. and if there was no 2020 filing, then they may not have received the 3rd stimulus, which is resolved on  the 2021 tax return.

social security recipients would have received the stimulus in most all cases, if that helps.

excluding social security,  how much was their income and is there evidence of any tax withholdings?
