TurboTax does not receive your refund. It's deposited into a 3rd-party bank to be split between you and Turbotax. This is why the IRS shows it was deposited. The bank is supposed to forward your portion using the direct deposit information that was originally on your return.  Since direct deposit failed, the bank sends your portion back to the IRS. It will send you a CP53E notice. You have 30 days to update or add a new bank account or select an exception condition to allow a paper check.

If you opted-in to receive refund status notifications in your online account, when you receive the notification, you may immediately update your direct deposit information.

How to update your direct deposit information

  1. Sign in or create an online account.

  1. Check your Notifications in your Account Home.
  2. Select the Add bank account notification.
(This option will only be present when a CP53E notice has been issued)
  3. Follow the prompts to add your account details. Guidance is provided if you don’t have a bank account.
  4. Allow around 2-5 business days for your refund status to update in your online account.

If you encounter any systemic issues that prevent you from updating your bank account information, read the message carefully and try again later.

@ tomas-archuleta-14

If a direct deposit failed at your bank, then your bank would send it back to whoever had sent it to your bank.   So if it came from one of TurboTax-affiliated third-party banks to your bank, then it would go back to the third-party bank, who would then issue you a check in the mail.   On rare occasions, the third-party bank might send it back to the IRS, but normally the third party bank sends you a check.   So watch your mail carefully.
