The IRS processes most refunds within 21 days; however, if your return requires a manual review, is missing information, or was flagged for identity verification it can take much longer.

Here is what you should do next in TurboTax and with the IRS:

  • Check your TurboTax E-file Status: Log into your TurboTax account to ensure your return was actually accepted by the IRS and not just transmitted or rejected.

  • Look for IRS Letters: Check your mail for Letter 4883C or Letter 5071C (identity verification) or CP05 (income review), which tell you exactly how to unfreeze your processing status.

  • Call the Treasury Offset Program (TOP): Contact the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS) automated line at 1-800-304-3107. This system will instantly tell you if any federal or state agency has flagged your refund for an offset.

  • Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040
