My daughter had worked at the end of 2019 and filed taxes and when she did I forgot I had put her on my return. I filed an amendment paid the extra amount due but nothing was processed until now. She is waiting for refund and also the stimulus. I dont know if they will ever get to it.

The IRS has not been working on mailed returns until very recently---and an amended return can only be filed by mailing it in.  Under normal circumstances you would be able to see something about your mailed in Form 1040X after about three weeks, but that is not the case right now.  The usual 4 months for processing an amended return is going to take longer.  Sorry.

Processing Delays for Paper Tax Returns: Taxpayers should file electronically through their tax preparer, tax software provider, or IRS Free File

We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it.

Do not file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

TurboTax will not know anything about your amended return, and nor will TT know that you put your 1040X  in an envelope and took it to a mailbox.  TurboTax does not get updates on mailed  (or e-filed) returns.

When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site.

Your daughter is unlikely to get a stimulus check based upon your amended return this year, since it is taking much longer than the "normal" four months to process an amended return.  She stands a much better chance of getting the stimulus money on her 2020 return when she files it next year.

Did you daughter mail in her own return?  She cannot e-file this year, even if you amended.  Her own return must be printed, signed and mailed.  Once a SSN is in the system she will have an "unfixable" rejection if she e-files a 2019 return that says she cannot be someone else's dependent.

And....you say she "worked at the end of 2019..."  That does not make it clear that you could not/should not have claimed her.  How old was she at the end of 2019?  Was she a full-time student in 2019?  If not, did she earn more than $4200 in 2019?    The rule is that if a person CAN be claimed they must say that on their own return, even if they are not actually being claimed.

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiance (etc.) as a dependent on your 2019 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

• They are related to you.

• They cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else.

• They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or   Mexican resident.

• They are not filing a joint return with their spouse.

• They are under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).

    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children

They live with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).

Qualifying relative

• They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).

• They cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else.

• They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

• They are not filing a joint return with their spouse.

They lived with you the entire year.

• They made less than $4200  (not counting Social Security)

• You provided more than half of their financial support. More info

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them.

You can check the status of an amended return here:

https://www.irs.gov/filing/wheres-my-amended-return

However, amended returns usually take about 4 months to process and with the COVID-19 slowdown probably 6-9 months this year.

In any event, your amended return will have no affect on a stimulus payment that was base on the 2019 original tax return filed.    Any difference will be paid when the 2020 tax return is filed in 2021.
