Question

I filed a tax return in maryland but want to compare what it would have been in arizona. Can I buy an AZ TT and run it along with my submitted md return for comparison?

The tag below your question indicates that you are using TurboTax Online. TurboTax Online is not suitable for trying out what-if scenarios. There is only one copy of your tax return, and any change you make is saved immediately. There is no back-out or undo, and no way to exit without saving the changes. You don't want to mess up the tax returns that you filed.

If you use the CD/Download TurboTax software instead of TurboTax Online you can save a copy of your completed tax returns with a different file name, then try out the AZ return in the copy without affecting your actual tax return. You would have to pay for the AZ software. In the copy that you are experimenting with, remove the MD return before you create the AZ return, to avoid any unwanted interaction between the two states.

Thanks.  I did use the purchased download version and appreciate your suggestion to create 2 copies to try out the AZ state return, which I did buy, but that purchase appears to have been attached to my present Fed teturn so that I have 2 states now visible.  The MD return does not seem to be affected and shows taxes twice that of AZ, which I expected.  Next time, I will do this twice and attach the MD state to one version and the AZ state to the other.  Very smart suggestion.  Thanks,

The state tax software isn't really "attached" to anything. The State Taxes tab is just showing you all the states that you have installed. If you didn't actually create an Arizona tax return, it doesn't affect your actual tax return at all, and there is no AZ return in the .tax2020 data file for your actual return. You can't control or limit which states are listed on the screen when you are working on a particular tax return. But all that matters is which state return you actually created.
