Question

I e-filed my taxes on 15Apr2026 and they were accepted by the IRS. As of 20May2026 I still have yet to receive my $4,710 refund. The IRS site says still processing.

I should have received my refund by now as I e-filed. What is the issue?

Sorry you are having to wait, but it's not uncommon.   The IRS says that most people who efile and choose direct deposit will receive their Federal refund within 21 days.  But sometimes it takes longer.  A significant number of returns require more processing for various reasons; some are chosen at random.  Sometimes they need more information.   Here are some things you can check before phoning the IRS:

You said your efiled return was accepted for processing by the IRS, so you can track your Federal refund at the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool.   Is there any additional message there?

The IRS refund tracker tool normally uses 3 stages:

  • Return received and is being processed.
  • Refund approved.
  • Refund sent and an expected deposit date.

If that tool shows your refund is still being processed, and since it has been longer than the usual 21 days, you can phone the IRS, if you wish, to see if they can tell you anything about the delay.
