I didn't receive my full federal refund

I received my money a week or so after I filed them but didn't get my full federal refund.

  • One possibility is that you used the Refund Processing Service to pay your TurboTax Online fees. If you did, your TurboTax fee plus the additional processing fee is deducted from your federal tax refund.
  • Another possibility is that your refund was reduced by the government, either to correct a calculation error or through a refund offset. You’ll get an explanatory letter from the government if your refund differs from what was on your filed return.

Q14: Why is my refund different than the amount reflected on the tax return I filed?

If you owe past-due federal tax, state income tax, state unemployment compensation debts, child support, spousal support, or certain federal nontax debts, such as student loans, all or part of your refund may be used (offset) to pay the past-due amount. Offsets for federal taxes are made by the IRS. All other offsets are made by the Treasury Department's Bureau of Fiscal Services (BFS). For federal tax offsets, you will receive a notice from the IRS. For all other offsets, you will receive a notice from BFS. To find out if you may have an offset or if you have any questions about it, contact the agency to which you owe the debt. See Tax Topic 203 for more information about refund offsets.

Another reason your refund amount may be different is if we made changes to your tax return that changed your refund amount. In this case you will get a notice in the mail from us explaining the changes. These reasons will be reflected in Where’s My Refund if they apply to your refund..

Same thing happened to us! Our refund is $11,963 and we only got $4800. Haven’t figured out why yet. I’ve called about whether we have debts or something it would go to and the automatic system said no. Really frustrated!!

@singabir  @crj.butterfly   The IRS will be sending you each a letter.  $11,963 is an extremely high refund, so it may not have been correct.

Same thing happened to me! over the past 2 YEARS the government owes me $2,800 and they payed me less than $1,000. Now its significantly less than the $11,000 they owe others  so there shouldn't be a problem. I don't owe ANYONE ANY money, no student loans, nothing! On top of which NO letter, they know where I live, explain that!

I think there is fraud goin on with Turbo tax. This same thing happened to me. My refund was suppose to be $5,954 sent on Wed. A deposit was made into my account for half the amount of my refund tuesday evening which came to $3,507. There was an ofset but it was only for 240 dollars. I called the IRS and they said that was all i owed and the rest was deposited into my acct. I dont owe any one else. Been calling all over since yesturday to see why im missing almost 2500 dollars but no answers. I know i requested to have my fees taken out from filing with turbo tax but that was only like 100 dollars. I truely am confused and extremely fraustrated! The answers that im seeing on here are not helping. I just dont understand why so many people are complaining about this and theres no investigstion. I just want the rest of my money. I have followed all the steps suggested. What should i do next?

Are you sure your FEDERAL refund was $5954?  Federal and state refunds come at different times. Or maybe your offset was $2400, not $240? $5954 minus $3507 equals $2447.
