"Here  is what really happens when you press that green button and transmit your tax return.

  • First, we "stamp" the return with an electronic postmark, and then we send it to the government.
  • Then we both wait 24 to 48 hours for the IRS to accept your return.
  • What are they doing? They are checking your personal information to make sure it matches their records.

Once you are accepted, you are on the IRS payment timetable. Only the IRS knows the status of processing your tax return, whether you owe taxes or are due a refund. Around the second week of March most departments at the IRS either closed completely or began operating with very limited staffing.  As a result, the processing of tax returns has been significantly impacted and taxpayers who filed within the weeks leading up to that time period and since then are experiencing lengthy delays in many cases.

Tax returns filed by mail have not yet been scanned into tracking systems as they were simply placed in secure storage awaiting the return of operations.

Around the second week of June some IRS workers began to return to work and some limited processing of returns and other services have resumed.  It is not yet known how long it  may take for taxpayers to see updates to the status of their returns.
