Solved

I applied money from my 2017 return to 2018 return, thinking I was going to have to pay. I ended up getting money back. How do I go about getting the money I put aside?

If you haven't filed your return yet, you can add the amount you applied to your 2018 by following these instructions:

  • Type "refund applied to this year" in the search box (upper right-hand corner of your screen)
  • Click the "jump to" link that appears
  • From here you can enter the amount you applied to your 2018 return from your 2017 refund

If you have already filed your return, this is an error that the IRS usually catches for you.  They will most likely adjust your refund and include the amount you applied from 2017 in your 2018 Refund.

If you receive your refund and the IRS did not adjust it to include the overpayment applied from last year, you will need to Amend your Tax Return to include it. You can click here for instructions on Amending your tax return: How to Change a Tax Return You Already Filed.

The 2018 Form 1040-X is estimated to be available March 7, 2019.  You can click here for information on IRS Forms Availability.

Note: You SHOULD NOT make any changes on your return in TurboTax until this form becomes available.
