Question

I amended my return, ended up owing $660 from the $3,715 return I initially got. Set up direct debit, but I never got the initial return. will the IRS recognize this?

I never received my return before amending my account. my new return is $3,055, with the IRS issue that amount and then try to take another $660 from my account? Or will they recognize I never got my initial return and just give me the $3,055?

@tbcjbb , this is exactly why it generally suggest  that  one WAIT to file an amended return till after the original has been processed ( as signified by refund having been received/deposited/issued ).  Note that an amended  return is usually given lower priority and therefore I suspect that your original  return will be processed, refund issued  and then somewhere downstream the amended return dealt with.  It is also possible that the amended return  and the original may get processed at the same time -- there is no way to know.

Suggest you just hold tight to see how things settle down.

IRS will process your first e-Filed tax return as submitted.
