Question

I am missing half of my refund!!!

After I received my federal "tax refund" in my bank account, I noticed that it was over $1500 short. I went to google to figure out if this happened to anyone else and it turns out, it has happened to A LOT of other people. People who filed with TurboTax. I looked at my refund status online and it said I was supposed to receive $2,955 but I only got $1,438. So what happened to the $1,517? I called the IRS number and the automated voice told me that my total amount was adjusted but did not tell me WHY. I do not have outstanding balances, I do not owe the government any money whether it be stimulus check related (I did not receive a stimulus check in 2021), student loans, I did not receive unemployment in 2021 so I don't owe any money with that. There is NO reason as to why TurboTax or their third party distributor would take $1500 of my tax refund. I need answers.

Sounds like the $1400 stimulus plus $117 of TurboTax fees

TurboTax does not get any information from the IRS after you file your tax return, so no one at TT knows why your refund was less.

Sometimes we can make an educated guess as to the reason for your reduced refund if you mention specific amounts--for example if your refund was short by $1400---it is likely to be a mix up regarding the 3rd EIP payment.   If it is short by $1800 or  $1500 or  a multiple of that amount  ---   maybe a mixup regarding the advance child tax credit payments.   Or---the fees you were supposed to pay for using TurboTax + the "refund processing fee" charged by the third party bank….

Did you choose to have TT fees deducted from your Federal refund?  (Remember that if you did that, you also agreed to an extra refund processing fee of $39.99 or $44.99 in CA)

How can I see my TurboTax  fees?

    What is Refund Processing Service?

The IRS will send you a letter that explains why your refund was reduced.   Meanwhile it might help you to check your online IRS account.

    Thank you for your help.
Would there be any insight on this next issue: IRS says it is because they think I received a third stimulus of 1400 but that isn’t true. I only ever received the first one in 2020. I was never told to expect a third stimulus and I never received one in any way, how can they say that I did?

Check those links I posted.  Check your IRS account to see if they sent it.  Double check your bank account.

If the IRS adjusted it for the 1400 stimulus their records show they sent it to you.

Double check your bank statements and Check your IRS account (both accounts if married)

If the IRS thinks they sent it to you but you didn't get it request a trace for a missing third Stimulus payment
