Question

I accidentally answered yes to "can somebody claim you as a dependent?" On my return instead of answering no. So I couldn't claim any stimulus checks. Do i need to amend

I was not able to get any of the recovery rebates because of this and it may disqualify me from the third one too. It would make it to where i am getting money back and owe nothing. But we supposedly shouldn't amend right now but it looks like i have no choice

If you already filed, yes, you'll need to amend your return to correct that you are not being claimed as a dependent.

  • To avoid unnecessary delays, do not amend until your original return has been fully processed.

  • You can e-file your 2020 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail.

  • Allow 16 weeks for processing.

See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending.

You can check the status of your amended return here, but allow 3 weeks after filing for it to show up.

there's no reason not to amend now..

you either e-File or paper not both.

your amended return will show the lower tax for unemployment benefits .

be careful how you change your dependent status because that can be tricky.
