Last year I had to install an application on my computer and it let me do mutliple returns. I assumed that was how the online portal worked but I can't see a way to file for anyone else. what gives?

Your assumption was wrong.
When you use Turbotax Online version, you can prepare only one return per account/payment. This Turbotax help topic tells you how to start another return:

That is a fundamental difference between the Turbotax Online version, which you access through a web browser, and the CD/Desktop version which installs and runs on your home computer.
With the CD/Desktop version, you can prepare as many returns as you wish just for the price of the box.

Thanks.

Talk about bait and switch... TurboTax sent me an email saying to renew for 2016 with a discount as an existing customer, knowing full well I submitted three returns last year (my first time using turbotax). It wasn't until I finished my return that I realized the 20% off thing I used wasn't what I thought it was and I have to drop another $60 to do my wife's return. Me thinks I will go get 2016 from a free source and I'm never going to pay for tax software again.
