How can I find out what has happened to my IRS income tax refund check. I filed early and my IRS refund check was to be sent to me in the mail.

It depends on whether you mailed your tax return in or if you e-filed. Typically e-filed returns are processed faster than paper filed returns. The IRS processing status page tells you which returns are currently being processed.

To track your refund, please see this link for more guidance to assist you. As far as paper checks, the IRS takes longer to send those out and instead, is sending CP53E notices requesting bank information so they can electronically deposit refunds. Please see Can I receive my tax refund via paper check? for more details.
