What did you have to pay (IRS taxes due, State taxes due)? If you have to pay State taxes, what State do you live in?

It depends.

As long as you have paid your tax liability, you should not have any issues.

You can also refer to the following link for an updated status on your account.

Can I change the payment method from "tax return" to "credit card'? I didn't know that if you choose the first option they charge you extra $40.
Any tip?

If you have already e-filed you can't change your payment method through TurboTax. However, you can call the IRS Payment Services at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about your payment and request to change the payment method. You can also pay your Federal balance with your credit or debit card on their website.

Is there a penalty/fee or anything if your original payment method (the one listed on your tax return) is closed, even if you have already paid your tax liability on the IRS website in advance?

Once a tax return has been filed you cannot change the bank information for a direct deposit.  If the bank information is not correct the bank will reject the tax refund and send the refund back to the IRS.  The IRS will send the refund as a check in the mail to the address on the tax return.

If you have not filed your tax return, in the File section of the program on Step 2 you can change the bank routing and account information.

After your tax return is filed, you cannot change the bank information for a direct deposit.  If the bank information is not correct the bank will send the refund back to the IRS.  The IRS will then issue a check and mail it to the address on the tax return.

You can try calling the IRS Payment Services at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about your payment and request to change the payment method.

Please refer to the following article below to change your refund method. Please note, if you already filed, you cannot change your refund method. The IRS will issue a paper check mailed to your address on file.

@SQ4678 This is a public web site that can be seen by anyone—including scammers and would-be identity thieves who would love to contact you and pretend to be from TurboTax.  Please remove the personal information you posted here ASAP by returning to your post and clicking the three little blue dots on the upper right to edit your post.

You have a problem----you need to change your address with the IRS.   When your refund goes to a closed account it will be sent back to the IRS and then the IRS will mail a check to the address on your tax return.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

You cannot  change banking information while your return is in pending, nor can you change it after the return is accepted.

If you e-filed:

Banking information for direct deposit is wrong

If you entered incorrect banking information for your refund, you can change it if your return is rejected.  If it is accepted, however, it is too late to change it.  The bank will reject the refund and send it back to the IRS.  Then the IRS will issue a paper check and mail it to the address you put on your tax return.  Expect a delay of at least a couple of weeks to receive your refund.

Here is what the IRS says about entering incorrect banking information

Once the tax return has been filed the bank information cannot be changed.

If you have a tax refund the bank for the direct deposit will reject the deposit and return the refund to the IRS.  The IRS will send the refund as a check in the mail to the address on the tax return.

If you have taxes owed and paid the taxes by direct debit then go to this IRS website for information on paying the taxes owed if your bank account has changed for the direct debit - https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-taxes-by-electronic-funds-withdrawal

  • Once your return is accepted, information pertaining to your payment, such as account information, payment date, or amount, cannot be changed. If changes are needed, the only option is to cancel the payment and choose another payment method.
  • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
  • Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.

Use the IRS payment website to pay the taxes owed - https://www.irs.gov/payments
