Question

E-File was rejected because of "duplicate" 1099-R forms.

My software (loaded from CD) is current with regards to updates. The "duplicate" 1009-R forms are NOT duplicates, but two of the six used (all from the same payer FEIN) do have the same distribution amount and tax withheld. However, each of the six has a unique Line 2 of the Payer's Name, and the Account number in Box 12 for each is unique. Prior years' e-filings have had this same situation and e-file has never failed before. Is this an issue on the IRS end of things, or a bug in the TurboTax file submitted to  them?  Obviously the internal identifier for each doesn't include all the unique identifiers for each of the six forms, but I can't tell from here if it's on the submitting end, or the receiving end of the e-file process.

I did attempt re-e-filing without making any changes, but it's too soon to tell if it will reject again. If it does, can I simply update the distribution amount for one of them to add a penny (currently shows zero cents) to force uniqueness without affecting the actual distribution amount after rounding?

I'm having the same issue.  Has this been fixed yet?

No. Last night, TT rep recommended I mail it in as they have no solution yet. Ironic haven't heard any other products having this problem.

I was able to file my return successfully today as well without any penny changes or other workarounds. It was accepted by the IRS within 15 minutes. I had previously ran into this error about 2 weeks ago. The latest TT client update I received was from 4/29. I'm not sure if that version included a bug fix, but it looks OK now.

I have the same issue.  Spoke with TurboTax 3 times and didn’t find anything to change.  Has been rejected three times so far.

Thank you for sharing this information. We will look into this rejection message of duplicated 1099-R forms when they are actually different.

In the meantime, as a possible workaround, if you add one penny to one of the 1099-R forms, they will have different amounts and should bypass the message.

Because cents are rounded to the nearest dollar, this will not have an effect on the amounts in your return unless it is 49 cents to 50 cents. In this case, subtract one penny from one of the 1099-R forms.

Please let us know if this does not resolve the issue and it is still rejected with this message.

Here is another case:  I e-filed on 12Feb2022 and got this rejection notice on 13Feb.  My situation is the same as most contributors:  two 1099-Rs with the same amounts (one for me and one for my wife) from the same financial institution (FI).  I had the same situation last year with no issues.  After reading the comments about changing the FI name slightly and also finding a FI typo in last years return, I tried that workaround first.  I submitted it on 13Feb and got a rejection on 14Feb.  Now I am going with the $0.01 approach on the gross amount on one 1099-R.  I submitted it today.

Update:  My return was accepted within 30 minutes of submission.

I had the same problem after having no problem last year even though my wife and I had the same amounts on 1099-R forms.  After trying a few things I added .01 to my 1099-R amount.  Hopefully this will take care of it.  It is either a Turbo Tax or IRS issue that needs fixed as the government wants us to use efiling.   In the furure we will not withdraw the exact same amounts from our IRA or Roth IRA accounts.  We shouldn't have to "game" the system to get efiling to work.

@pat651 It may be that one of your withholding amounts are duplicated. If so, you could change one by one dollar and it wouldn't affect your tax so probably would not create a problem. It just might result in your refund being adjusted by one dollar.

Just ran into this frustrating bug. Someone should inform TurboTax that this is a rather common use case: a couple that's maxing out each of their Backdoor Roth contributions using the same financial institution.

But anyway I've gone ahead and resubmitted my return after applying the 1 cent trick. Fingers crossed that it'll suffice to get around this bug.

My Fed return was rejected for "duplicate 1099-R" even though amounts are different, so the $.01 trick won't work for me. Two 1099's because one amount was for one state's withholding, and the other was for another state. I tried removing the account number - let's see if that works.

I received two 1099's from the same company this year.  Both 1099's have the same distribution amount on line 1 and the same taxable amount on line 2A.   For half of 2021 I lived in CA. and one of the 1099's show CA withholding taxes on line 14 and the other shows no state tax withheld. The IRS keeps rejecting the return because they think I have duplicate 1099's. I was thinking of adding one cent to the line 1 distribution amount to make the numbers look different but not effect the return. What should I do?

Previous comments in this thread indicate that if you add $.01 to one of the 1099's, that TT will accept it. They say add it to both Line 1 and Line 2a of the form.

Not sure it why doesn't work in my case where the Line 1 amounts are clearly different, but good luck!

We have two retirement accounts that are managed by the same retiree pension service. They look like this on form 1099-R:

[ this bank ] Retiree Services for

    [ company A ] Pension Plan

       and

[ this bank ] Retiree Services for

    [ company B ] Pension Plan

I entered them on Line 1 and Line 2 of the form as shown. Apparently the IRS review only looks at Line 1 and saw these as a duplicate entry. I changed them to put the entire source on Line 1, like this:

[ this bank ] Retiree Services for [ company A ] Pension Plan

       and

[ this bank ] Retiree Services for [ company B ] Pension Plan

I also received the same message from Turbo Tax regarding 'duplicate 1099R forms" in reality, the forms weren't duplicate, just the same exact dollar amounts for my wife and I. for the tax year 2020, the same amounts were entered and they were accepted. I did the work around as suggested by others by adding .01 to the amount and they were accepted.

I had a similar situation because our son died in June and his 401(k) was distributed to me and my wife equally. Therefore we have two 1099s that are in the exact same amount with the exact same withholding. One is made payable to my wife and one is made payable to me. However one of the boxes is checked 4 which is death which indicates it is not a routine distribution. Try explaining that the TurboTax or the IRS!

IRS declared error.  Did not allow recovery rebate credit form information.  Its costing me over 1K$.  I've checked the worksheet info.  Q2 a yes skipped to Q6; probably should not.  Its confusing but I agree with IRS and will pay the difference.  Error should not have been made. I answered the questions correctly as written.  Yes we gave ss# dated prior to 2021.  Q2 and Q5 as this question and lead to making a claim that is not correct. The rebate was received but is not listed as income; both is true but the $ is not income and should not be deducted.  A deduction is only valid if NOT received.  IRS wins and filing will be corrected in spite of the error in Turbotaxe's worksheet.

The 3rd Stimulus payment you received should be listed on line 13.  Isn't it there?  Unless you have a high income to phase out the credit, the only important lines are 8 and 13.  The Turbo Tax worksheet should match the IRS worksheet.  Did you fill out the IRS worksheet by hand to compare it to Turbo Tax?

See IRS worksheet for line 30 in 1040 instructions page 59

Line 30 is only if you didn't get the full amount or qualify for more.
