Question

Do I need to file an amended state return if my federal return is being amended by the feds? Do I need to adjust my federal return so it will populate the state return?

I had additional dividend income for 2018.  The feds sent a letter, etc., and the federal part is covered.  They are amending the federal return. Do I need to update (not send) the federal return in TurboTax so it will populate the state return? Otherwise, I can't seem to be able to add income on just the state return.  Thanks!

for certain if your tax liability for the state will change if you add the missing dividend. generally, the change must be made through the federal return by amending it.  just don't send it to the IRS. Make sure when you print out the amended state return you include all required forms.  can't tell you which they are since every state is different but TT should include them.  you may want to go to your state's income tax website and read the instructions for amended returns.

use a mailing method where you get proof of delivery. either TT or the state instructions should give the address.  some states may allow electronic payment thru its website for others you must include payment. if you send payment make sure it has identifying info such as SSN, tax year, and some contact info - either e-mail or phone number

depending on how much you owe you may still get a bill from the state for penalties and interest.

what if your state taxes don't change. again every state is different. the IRS does notify the state. some states do require the filing of an amended return even when nothing changes. that's why it's wise to check the filing instructions for the state.
