Can someone from TurboTax help me with telling me why my refund was reduced? I got a letter in the mail that ended up being fake, but I still lost most of my refund.

I did my taxes here on TurboTax and was told my refund was going to be one amount, but a day after filing, it was reduced by more than half. I got a letter in the mail stating why it was reduced and that I owed a state money. I called that company to find out why they took the money and a representative that I talked to from there told me it was a scam. I was advised to get in contact with the IRS, but they never take my call due to a high call volume of the same issue. I don't know what else to do.

TurboTax receives no information from the IRS or your state after you file your tax return; no one at TT will ever know why your refund was reduced. Contact the IRS if your federal refund was reduced; contact your state if the state refund was reduced. When the IRS reduces your refund, it takes a few weeks, but they mail you a letter that explains. When the state reduces your refund, the state mails you a letter that explains why your refund was reduced.

TurboTax does not receive feedback from the IRS regarding money that was offset from your refund. If you owed back taxes or child support, you will receive a letter of explanation from the IRS in several weeks. The WMR site will contain a message regarding your offset. It is also possible that the IRS caught a mistake you made and reduced your refund.
