Question

Can I recover my 2022 tax return if I accidentally deleted it (apparently)?

I e-filed the 2022 return and thought I'd saved a PDF copy. However, I hit a wrong button, and now the 2022 return in TurboTax is blank, and I can't find the PDF.

Did you use online TurboTax?   You might be in the wrong account.

You have to access your own account and/or  print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.

Start a 2023 return online and enter some personal information  so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.

Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them.  Log out of the account you are in now.

Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax?  If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.

You can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $43, an actual copy of your tax return.

SAVE YOUR TAX RETURN !

EVERY year before mid-October you should save a copy of your tax return as a pdf and print a copy of it for your records.  That way you will not be searching online frantically when you need it for a lender, FAFSA forms, your next tax return, etc.

NOTE:  TurboTax and the IRS save returns for seven years.  Returns older than seven years are purged.

If you filed online, you can download a new copy from your online account.

If you used the desktop software installed on your own Mac or PC, only you have copies of your tax returns.  You would have a tax data file for each tax return (the name is something like "firstname lastname 2022.tax2022", usually in your Documents folder.   And you might have a PDF file if you saved your return as a PDF.  Those files could have been moved to a different location accidentally, but if you deleted them by mistake, no on else has copies.  Use your computer's find command to look on your hard drive or backups.   If you find the data file, you can open it in the program and make a new PDF.

Also be aware that if you have Turbotax 2023 installed on your computer and you find the 2022 data file, double-clicking the 2022 data file will open the 2023 program with a blank return to transfer last years info and start a new return.  To open the 2022 data file with the 2022 program, you must first open the 2022 tax program, then look for the data file and open it with the program's File...Open command.
