Question
Trying to amend my 2024 joint federal return (filed April 2025, accepted) to add a missed nondeductible Traditional IRA contribution for my spouse.
Steps:
1. Tax Home → 2024 return → "Amend (change) 2024 return"
2. Federal → Deductions & Credits → Traditional and Roth IRA Contributions → updated spouse's total contribution and the "Jan 1 – Apr 15, 2025" portion
3. Walked through all follow-up screens (recharacterization, basis, etc.) — left everything else unchanged
4. Top of screen correctly showed an updated Federal refund (a small increase) and a slightly lower VA tax due
Problem:
When I download the PDF from Print Center (Tools → Print Center → both 2024 Federal + Virginia → "Just my tax return(s)"):
- PDF contains Form 1040, NOT Form 1040-X
- Cover page says "Electronic Filing Instructions for your 2024 Federal Tax Return" — no mention of amendment
- AGI shown is the new amended value, but the refund line still shows the original refund amount (not the amended one)
- No Form 760 Amended for Virginia either
Never saw a File step that explicitly said "this is an amendment." The original "Filed" status from April is still showing on Tax Home.
Questions:
1. Is there a step in the amendment workflow that triggers Form 1040-X generation that I might have skipped?
2. Should I close and re-enter the amendment workflow from scratch?
3. Known TurboTax Online bug for small-dollar amendments?
Using TurboTax Online Premium. Thanks for any guidance.
