Books for College Deduction

"Did you pay for books or materials to attend school?" Does this apply to both undergraduate and graduate students, or only undergrads? Particularly the part that reads "Books and materials not required to be purchased from the school".

The part about "books and materials not required to be purchased from the school" applies to the American Opportunity Credit only, so it doesn't apply to graduate students.
