I have received a 1099-MISC from an oil company that I receive royalties from. However, I do not own the property and I am not self employed. Not sure how to report that as everything in Schedule C and E require a business names/IDs

You don't need a business name or ID to report your 1099-MISC with royalty income in box 2.

  1. In Wages and Income, Start Income from 1099-MISC
  2. Continue until you can enter the information from your form. Continue.
  3. Select that it is investment income from property that you own.
  4. The program is going to create a Schedule E for you. That's where this type of income is reported.
  5. Description: oil property, Location: wherever the company is located.
  6. Continue until the end.
