Head of Household status

I'm using turbotax to file the tax return.

However, I'm trying to get the head of household status for tax filing.

I have a dependent, a sister, aged 25, who lived away as a full-time student, for whom I paid 50% support.

Turbotax asks if I lived with my sister and I answered "No".

So, Turbotax says I'm not qualified for the status of head of household.

However, IRS Publication 501 states that  "A qualifying person lived with you in the home for more than half the year (except for temporary absences, such as school"

Turbotax didn't ask if the dependent was temporarily absent for such as school.

I believe I should be able to file as the head of household.

Please feel free to correct me If I am mistaken.

Head of Household status

You just need to indicate in the My Info, dependent section that your sister lived with you the whole year or the number of months she lived with you including the months at school.  The total months needs to be greater than 6 to qualify and support has to be greater than 50%.

Revisit the dependent section and you should be good to go.
