Typically,  a final, but regular, individual income tax return (e.g., Form 1040) is filed for a decedent by the personal representative.

An estate income tax return (Form 1041) is required to be filed if the estate has gross income for the tax year of $600 or more, or a beneficiary who is a nonresident alien.
