Amend taxes to claim health insurance coverage exemption (330 full days present in a foreign country

I filed my 2016 taxes with another tax preparer, paid my taxes, but mistakenly did not claim physical presence in a foreign country.

All of my income was earned in the U.S, however was living in Brazil and paid the health insurance penalty in 2016.

I would like to recover the health insurance penalty paid in 2016 and claim the health insurance coverage exemption, since I was physically present in a foreign country for at least 330 full days within a 12-month period.

How do I go about amending my return using Turbo Tax?

If you did not prepare your 2016 tax return using TurboTax, it is not easy to amend using the software. You would have to:

1. Buy a CD/Download copy of the 2016 software. (see: https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/)

2. Re-create your original 2016 tax return using the software, exactly as it was.
